A GEELONG lingerie store has erected Christmas advertisements featuring scantily-clad women on top of Santa Claus, amid concerns over their “hyper-sexualised” advertisements.
The racy posters are hung in the front windows of the Honey Birdette store in Geelong’s Westfield Shopping Centre, in plain sight of children and young families.
One poster features a woman in lingerie sitting astride a Santa Claus lying on his back, with the text ‘Sorry kids, we gave Santa the night off’.
The latest advertising campaign from the lingerie chain comes on the back of a petition calling on Westfield shopping Centre’s to ban Honey Birdette’s “porn-style” advertising.
The petition has received 53,450 signatures in a number of weeks.
“The Honey Birdette posters depicting women in hyper-sexualised poses and various states of undress introduces concepts of pornography and sexuality to a hapless public, including little 4-year-old girls like my daughter,” petition author Kenneth Thor said.
“The innocence of young children is one of the most precious things in life. These images and the company behind them, robs kids of their innocence.”
Honey Birdette have been approached for comment.
When asked about the advertising, Scentre Group, who runs the Australian and New Zealand Westfield chains, issued a statement claiming it aimed to “provide an environment which meets the needs and tastes of a broad section of the community”.
“The retail offer available at its Westfield Shopping Centres is curated to meet these respective needs,” the spokeswoman said.
“As with all its retail partners, Scentre Group works closely with Honey Birdette to address any customer concerns.
“Any customer feedback — positive and negative — that is received by Scentre Group is always shared with Honey Birdette stores.”
